Dallas guard picks Rockets

Jonathan Amos, a 6-3 guard at Hillcrest High School in Dallas, said yesterday that he has decided to accept a scholarship offer from the University of Toledo, and that he hopes to make a contribution on the court for the Rockets next season.

"The chance to play right away was a big thing for me, and I also feel like Toledo is a place where I will fit in," Amos said yesterday from his home in Dallas. "I like their style of play, and I think they have a lot of good players, so they're set up to be good for a few years now."

Amos said he was also considering offers from North Texas and Southern Methodist, but after visiting Toledo earlier this month, made his decision to join the Rockets. He said the UT coaches first looked at him at an AAU tournament in California this past summer.

"I liked the coaching staff, and when I visited campus I liked the environment there. I felt like it was a win-win situation for me," Amos said.

Amos averaged 15.2 points per game last season as Hillcrest went 18-11. He earned all-district honors last year after being chosen all-region as a sophomore.

"Jonathan is a kid who is committed to the game and who can do a lot for you," said Von Harris, the coach at Hillcrest. "He can shoot the 3, take you off the dribble, and he has the leaping ability to post people up. The fact he is a hard worker and a team player just makes him that much more valuable."

Amos can not make a written commitment until Nov. 10, the first day of the official NCAA signing period for recruits. NCAA rules do not permit the UT coaches to comment on recruits until a written commitment is received.
