Hot-shooting UMass tops Toledo women
12/7/2004AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team shot 60 percent from the field in the first half last night on its way to a 76-56 victory over the University of Toledo.
Massachusetts was 21-for-35 from the field in the first half and took a 45-27 lead into intermission. The Minutewomen shot 54.7 percent for the game as they improved to 4-3.
The Rockets shot just 29.4 percent in the first half and 29.9 percent for the game.
UMass outscored the UT 16-0 on fast-break points.
"Their transition baskets in the first half just killed us," Toledo coach Mark Ehlen said. "I thought we did a better job in the second half but it was too little too late."
Olivia Terry had 14 points, Danielle Bishop 12 and Karin Hoogendam 10 for the Rockets (1-5).
Hoogendam led UT with nine rebounds.
Massachusetts had four players in double figures. Tamara Tatham and Pam Rosanio each had 13 points and Patrycja Gulak 12 for the Minutewomen. The three of them were a combined 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) from the field.
Brooke Campbell added 11 points and had 13 rebounds.
The Rockets' next game is Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cleveland State.
HONEGGER HONORED: Bowling Green's Liz Honegger was named Mid-American Conference West Division co-player of the week.
Honegger, a 5-11 sophomore center, averaged 14.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.3 blocks and 3.3 steals in leading the Falcons to a 2-1 record last week.
WOMEN'S POLL: Louisiana Tech is out. LSU is unanimous.

A slew of upsets triggered a major shuffling in the rest of the Top 25, which for the first time in nearly 13 years did not include Louisiana Tech.
Louisiana Tech (3-2), which had been 21st, lost two of its three games during the week and dropped out, ending a string of 221 consecutive appearances in the poll.
The last time the Lady Techsters were not ranked was the final poll of the 1991-92 season.
Tennessee leads with 344 consecutive poll appearances.
LSU held the No. 1 spot yesterday for the second straight week and this time, the Lady Tigers received all 45 first-place votes from a national media panel.
ANN ARBOR - Kelley Helvey scored her only basket of the game with six seconds to play, giving Michigan a 45-43 victory over UNLV last night.
Helvey is a sophomore from Toledo's Central Catholic High School.
Tabitha Pool led the Wolverines (3-3) with 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
