Hoogendam, UT women keep Akron winless

1/9/2005

AKRON - Karin Hoogendam scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half yesterday as the University of Toledo defeated Akron 58-40 in a Mid-American Conference women's basketball game.

Hoogendam also had 14 rebounds, tying her career high. It was her fourth double-double of the season.

Freshman guard Aaron Richmond came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points for the Rockets (6-7, 2-0), who have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Toledo held Akron without a point for a stretch of 10 minutes and 29 seconds, starting with 7:03 left in the first half and continuing 3:26 into the second half.

Nobody scored in double figures for the Zips (0-13, 0-2). It was Toledo's 30th consecutive victory over Akron.

Both teams shot poorly. The Rockets shot 29.4 percent from the field (20-for-68) and the Zips 24.5 percent (12-for-49).

That was one reason UT was able to grab a season-high 57 rebounds, including 23 offensive boards.

Akron had 30 rebounds, including only three on its offensive end.

The Rockets return to action Tuesday at home against Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. The Huskies are 4-8 after beating Eastern Michigan 55-53 last night in their league opener.
