OXFORD, Ohio Karin Hoogendam got serious in the second half, scoring 14 of her 18 points after halftime as the University of Toledo edged Miami 68-65 in women s basketball.

She also hauled down 15 rebounds, a career high.

After leading by 14 points at halftime, Miami (8-8, 2-3 MAC) was unable to hold off UT (8-9, 4-2).

Coach [Mark] Ehlen took me aside at halftime and told me I was underachieving, Hoogendam said. He said I needed to play like a leader and senior. I took that to heart and I knew I had to come out and get the job done.

Olivia Terry added 17 points for UT. Danielle Bishop had 11.

This was a big road win, Ehlen said. Learning how to come back from a sizable deficit on the road is a good sign for a young team.

A different Toledo team came out in the second half, as the Rockets, who shot 30 percent in the first half, hit their first five shots of the second half and closed back to within single digits at 44-36 after a Hoogendam three-point play at 15:40. Bishop hit a pair of treys as UT pulled to within 46-42 with 13:26 to play.

A UT 3-pointer at 6:23 knotted the score at 51-51. The Rockets went ahead 56-53 at 4:47 when Hoogendam converted another three-point play.

After closing to 63-62, Miami was unable to gain the lead as UT converted five straight free throws.
