Toledo runs away from NIU
2/17/2005DeKALB, Ill. -A pair of runs, one in each half, resulted in Toledo's 64-55 victory over Northern Illinois.
The Rockets had an 18-2 explosion in the last 11:10 of the the first half and a 13-4 burst in the final five minutes of the game.
The victory ties UT (12-11, 8-4) with Eastern Michigan in the Mid-American Conference West, two games behind Bowling Green, following the Eagles' 73-55 loss to Miami last night.
Toledo started the game in a 10-2 hole before Danielle Bishop did a lot of shoveling to get the Rockets back in the game, scoring 8 of the 18 points in UT's first run. She led the team with 25 points.
Toledo finally took the lead at 22-21 on the first of two back-to-back 3-pointers by Olivia Terry with 9:19 left in the half.
Terry finished with 12 points and Savannah Werner scored 13.
The big run pushed the UT lead to 34-23 at halftime.
The Huskies roared back in the second half, tying the score at 51-51 with 5:01 remaining in the game.
The Rockets regained the lead for good at 53-51 when Crystal Young banked in an off-balance jumper with 4:30 to play before going on their final run.
"We had a big lead and blew it, but we buckled down and found a way to win on the road," Toledo coach Mark Ehlen said.
"I think that is a great sign for this team as the MAC tournament quickly approaches.
"The difference in tonight's game were the two big runs.
"I also thought we played well defensively and we were able to knock down some shots in clutch situations.
Bishop was 10-of-18 from the field, including 3-of-5 on 3 pointers. She also led the Rockets with nine rebounds.
Toledo shot 43.6 percent from the field (24-55), including 12-of-24 in the second half and mad e 9-of-11 free throws in the game.
Werner's 13 points helped Toledo's bench accumulate a 17-5 scoring edge.
Jamie Wilson was the scoring leader for Northern Illinois (6-17, 3-9) with 17 points.
Stephanie Raymond added 14 points for the Huskies.
NIU shot 37.9 percent from the field (22-of-58) and made 6-of-7 free throws.

HIGHLAND HILLS, Ohio - Niccole Brown registered 20 points and 11 rebounds and Sarah Johnson added 18 points in the Owens' rout.
In addition, Misti Horton had 14 points, Bridget Buss 11, and Heather Peer 8 points, 5 assists and 6 steals.
Owens (17-10, 8-4 OCCAC) will host Cincinnati State Saturday at 1 p.m. Cincinnati State is ranked 18th in NJCAA Division I, while the Express compete in Division II.
Saturday will be Fan Appreciation Day.
