Drake rips Rockets in Sun Bowl Tournament

EL PASO - The University of Toledo men's basketball team started strong against Drake last night in the State Farm Sun Bowl Tournament, but it didn't last long.

The Rockets jumped out to an 11-5 lead, but Drake make a 14-0 run midway through the first half and never looked back in cruising to a 70-52 victory.

The Bulldogs led 40-21 at halftime.

UT never made a threat in the second half, getting only as close 57-40 with 8:45 left.

Toledo falls to 4-6, while Drake is 8-2 and has won seven straight games. The Rockets play at 7:30 tonight against Texas-El Paso (6-6), which lost 100-97 to Jackson State.

Ajay Calvin led the Bulldogs with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Nick Grant added 10 points.

Florentino Valencia paced the Rockets with 15 points, including hitting all seven of his shots from the floor. Justin Ingram finished with 12 points.

UT shot just 3 of 21 from 3-point range (14 percent) and was outrebounded 44-26.

Drake shot 22 of 49 (45 percent) from the floor, and went 21 of 24 at the free-throw line.

UT hit 23 of 61 (38 percent) from the floor, while making just 3 of 8 from the line.
