Rockets release recruit Ehlen signed
4/30/2008One of the three recruits signed by the University of Toledo women's basketball program for the 2008-09 season has been granted a release from her scholarship.
Morgan Harrington of Belle-
ville, Ill., will not come to UT, her father, Jay Harrington, said. Jay Harrington said his daughter has not yet decided on another school.
Harrington, a 5-foot-8 point guard, was recruited and signed by former coach Mark Ehlen in November. With the coaching change at UT, the school allowed Harrington to be released from her scholarship last week.
Morgan Harrington averaged 14.4 points per game her senior year at Belleville East High School despite missing six weeks with a knee injury.
Jay Harrington said it was a tough decision for his daughter to make.
"Basically it was her comfort level that was the difference," Jay Harrington wrote in an email. "The two-plus months it took to hire [a new coach] really worked on her mind, not knowing who was coming in and speculating."
The Rockets' other two signed recruits, Clare Aubry and Courtney Ingersoll, are expected to come to UT. New UT coach Tricia Cullop now has six available scholarships for the 2008-09 season. The late signing period runs until May 21, but players can still sign a tender of financial assistance after that date.
NFL TRYOUTS: Four former UT football players have been invited to NFL rookie minicamps this weekend on a tryout basis.
Tight end Chris Hopkins said he will go to the New York Jets' minicamp and wide receiver/cornerback Andrew Hawkins said he is participating in the Cleveland Browns' minicamp.
UT coach Tom Amstutz said offensive lineman David Perkins has a tryout with the Detroit Lions and linebacker/safety Greg Hay has one with the Kansas City Chiefs. The players have the possibility of signing an undrafted free-agent contract at the end of the weekend.
MEN'S GOLF: The UT men's golf team will play in the Mid-American Conference championship Friday through Sunday at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The Rockets' five golfers in the tournament will be seniors Justin Hull and Ciaran McAleavey along with freshmen Ben Boyer, Jean-Hubert Trahan and Nathan Wine.
Boyer and Wine are both coming off strong performances at last Saturday's First Energy Intercollegiate with seventh- and 10th-place showings. Their performance helped UT finish second in a field of 12.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing how we perform after playing so well last weekend," coach Jamie Mauntler said. "I've seen a lot of improvement from our freshmen this year, and I think they have a good confidence level heading into the tournament."
MEN'S TENNIS: UT men's tennis co-captains senior Chris Clark and junior Jared Miller were named second-team All-MAC yesterday. Clark had a 23-17 singles record, mostly at the No. 2 spot. Miller went 12-12 in dual meets and 18-17 on the season at the No. 1 singles spot. In doubles play, Miller had a 5-1 MAC mark with freshman Nutthavit Likitkumchorn.
