Broussard to plead guilty in point-shaving scheme

DETROIT — Another former University of Toledo football player plans to plead guilty to charges stemming from an alleged point-shaving scheme, according to federal court documents.

Quinton Broussard will appear in federal court in Detroit on Aug. 3, according to court documents. He was one of seven UT basketball or football players, along with Detroit-area gambers Ghazi "Gary" Manni and Mitchell Karam, charged in a conspiracy to influence Rocket sporting contests by bribery for a period of about two years, beginning in December, 2004.

On May 6, 2009, an indictment handed up by a grand jury accused Manni and Karam of paying money and providing other things of value to the UT athletes to influence the outcome of games. The men then would bet on those games -- including about $407,000 on UT basketball games from November, 2005, to December, 2006.

Broussard would be the fourth former Rockets athlete to plead guilty, following basketball player Sammy Villegas and football players Adam Cuomo and Harvey "Scooter" McDougle Jr. McDougle Jr. is scheduled to appear in federal court in Detroit for a plea hearing July 18, according to court documents.
