Ingersoll bows out in semifinal round of 3-point competition

NEW ORLEANS — University of Toledo’s Courtney Ingersoll and Purdue’s Ryne Smith advanced to the semifinals before bowing out of their respective 3-point shooting competitions Thursday in New Orleans.

The seniors participated in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at Tulane University as a prelude to this weekend’s NCAA men’s final four.

Ingersoll, the nation’s leading 3-point shooter, missed 14 of her first 15 shots in the semifinals, finishing with eight points. She scored 15 in the first round.

Southern California’s Ashley Corral outdueled Louisville’s Becky Burke in the finals, 20-11.

Smith, a Whitmer graduate, narrowly missed advancing to the finals after his score of 18 fell short of Northwestern’s John Shurna’s 20 and Temple’s Juan Fernandez’s 19. Smith’s 16 points in the first round were second most.

Shurna made his final seven shots to beat Fernandez, 21-20.

Shurna and Corral faced off in a battle of champions, with Shurna prevailing 24-14.
