UT's Kertesz qualifies for national meet

JACKSONVILLE -- University of Toledo junior Emma Kertesz, a Central Catholic graduate, finished in 10th place in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA East Preliminary track and field meet Thursday, qualifying her for the NCAA championship meet June 8 in Des Moines.

The top 12 runners in two regionals qualified for the national meet. Kertesz posted a time of 34:36.34.

Two other Rockets ran in the 10,000-meter race. Senior Ari Fisher finished 19th (35:11.13), while sophomore Megan Vogelsong came in 29th (36:13.43). Junior Katie Bollin, a Bedford graduate, finished 44th in the long jump at 18 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

Tennis

PARIS -- Novak Djokovic's bid to win a fourth consecutive Grand Slam championship -- and first at the French Open -- might require a semifinal victory over Roger Federer.

Friday's draw set them up to face each other in Paris at the same stage as last year, when Federer beat Djokovic in four epic sets to end the Serb's 43-match winning streak that dated to December, 2010.

Djokovic's quarterfinal opponent could be No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France. Other possible quarterfinal matchups: Federer vs. 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro or No. 7 Tomas Berdych; six-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal vs. No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic; and No. 4 Andy Murray vs. No. 6 David Ferrer.

The highlight of the women's quarterfinals set up in Friday's draw could be Serena Williams against Maria Sharapova.

Golf

FORT WORTH -- Jason Dufner moved into position for his second straight victory and third in five weeks, shooting a bogey-free 6-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead in the Colonial.

The Byron Nelson Championship winner last week, Dufner had an 11-under 129 total at Hogan's Alley. First-round leader Zach Johnson was second after a 67, and Bo Van Pelt and Tommy Gainey were third at 7 under. Van Pelt had a 64, and Gainey shot 67.

Defending champion David Toms missed the cut.

■ BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Hale Irwin shot his age with a 5-under 66, finishing the second round of the Senior PGA Championship two shots behind leaders Roger Chapman and John Cook.

Cook also had a 66 to match Chapman at 7 under after a more forgiving day at Harbor Shores. Chapman had a 67. Michael Allen broke the course record with a 64, recovering from a first-round 77.

Colleges

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami says it will remain committed to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Hurricanes athletic director Shawn Eichorst released a statement Friday saying the school has not had any "formal or informal discussions" about switching affiliations.

Speculation about schools like Florida State, Clemson, and Miami in the ACC has increased in recent days, with reports linking all three on some level to the Big 12.
