The University of Toledo football team picked up a verbal commitment in defensive end John Stepec of Mentor.

The rising senior at Lake Catholic is a three-star prospect by Scout.com and ranked 76th nationally at his position. He is unranked by Rivals.com.

Stepec (6-foot-3, 247 pounds) recorded 80 tackles and 12 sacks last season. He chose the Rockets over finalist Cincinnati. Other schools to offer included Bowling Green, Boston College, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Minnesota, and Syracuse.

Stepec is UT's ninth commitment in the 2013 class.

ABSENT: Not listed on UT's preseason roster are two freshmen: running back Jody Webb and receiver Armani Miller. Webb, of Whitmer, was the player of the year in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. He previously said academic scores could delay his passing the NCAA Clearinghouse and joining the team.

MARROW ON THE MOVE: Former UT defensive back Desmond Marrow is joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he was cut Thursday by the Houston Texans. Marrow, a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 2011, announced the move on his Twitter account. At Tampa Bay, he will join fellow UT undrafted rookie free agents Mike VanDerMeulen and Danny Noble.
