TUCSON — Arizona beat Toledo 24-17 in overtime after forcing an incompletion on fourth-and-20 to end the game.

Austin Dantin’s slant pattern for Bernard Reedy was way off. Earlier in the drive Dantin slightly underthrew Alonzo Russell in the end zone.

Arizona scored its points in the extra session when Matt Scott fought off pressure and rifled touchdown pass to Terrence Miller.

FOURTH QUARTER

TUCSON — Arizona kicker John Bonano missed his second chip shot field goal of the night with two seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Bonano’s 25-yard field goal from the right hash drifted left, wasting a drive in which the Wildcats converted first downs on five straight plays.

Austin Dantin led Toledo on a scoring drive earlier in the quarter, punctuated by a 42-yard field goal by J.D. Detmer that tied the game at 17-17.

THIRD QUARTER

Ka’Deem Carey bursted through the middle of Toledo’s defense for a 73-yard touchdown, putting Arizona in front 17-13 entering the fourth quarter.

Arizona recovered the ensuing onside kick but couldn’t do anything with it.

Austin Dantin has replaced Terrance Owens at quarterback for UT after Owens lost a fumble in Arizona territory. The miscue did not end up costing the Rockets, as a block in the back penalty away from the play nullified a 32-yard TD run. The drive ended with John Bonano’s 24-yard field goal clanking the right upright.

SECOND QUARTER

All the breaks are going the way of University of Toledo, which leads Arizona 14-10 at halftime.

Arizona turned the ball over twice, including once in the red zone, and committed a senseless personal foul penalty that gave UT possession at the 1-yard line. David Fluellen scored the next play, running behind 295-pound Greg Mancz, who lined up as fullback.

Meanwhile, Terrance Owens appears to have the “hot hand” coach Matt Campbell is looking for at quarterback. Two of Owens’ first three drives netted touchdowns. He found Alonzo Russell streaking down the sideline for a 59-yard strike to put UT on the board early in the second quarter and led a 10-play charge the next drive, capped by Fluellen’s TD. Austin Dantin has not entered the game since the second drive.

UT is having all sorts of trouble defending the pass. Arizona quarterback Matt Scott is 17 of 24 for 275 yards and a touchdown on a diving 30-yard reception by Austin Hill in the end zone. Third-string safety Noah Key was beat on coverage, and he was in the game only because of an equipment issue to Jermaine Robinson and the suspension to Ross Madison.

One of Scott’s only miscues came when he threw over the head of Richard Morrison on a post pattern that might have gone for a touchdown. That drive ended with a punt.

Arizona, who is outgaining UT 333-226, blew another chance to score points when Mark Singer stripped Austin Hill at UT’s 36 and Robert Bell recovered.

FIRST QUARTER

Austin Dantin’s two possessions as quarterback led to zero points and University of Toledo trails Arizona, 3-0, after the first quarter.

Dantin, who won the start on a coin flip earlier in the week, advanced his second drive to Arizona’s 26, but the Rockets lost seven yards on third down. J.D. Detmer then pushed a 48-yard field goal attempt wide right.

Terrance Owens started the third series at quarterback, leading UT to its 33 when the quarter ended.

Arizona’s Richard Morrison has twice blunted scoring chances, dropping a pass at the goal line before losing the ball inside UT’s 10 on the next possession.
