Rockets open MAC play with win
9/21/2013MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The University of Toledo opened Mid-American Conference play today with a 38-17 win at Central Michigan. The 21-point differential marked UT's most lopsided win of the past two seasons.
The Rockets (2-2, 1-0) forced four turnovers of CMU freshman quarterback Cooper Rush and turned them into to three touchdowns.
Running back David Fluellen had two rushing touchdowns and 197 yards.
THIRD QUARTER
The University of Toledo leads Central Michigan, 24-17.
The teams traded field goals and turnovers in the third quarter.
The Rockets tacked on three points on their first drive on Jeremiah Detmer's 35-yard field goal.
A Cassius McDowell fumble in Toledo territory negated Ray Bush's interception on the previous drive, and Central Michigan turned the short field into three points.
True freshman quarterback Logan Woodside has not returned for Toledo since Terrance Owens entered early in the second quarter.
HALFTIME
Quarterback Terrance Owens entered the game with nine-plus minutes left in the first half and led the University of Toledo on a 96-yard scoring drive.
Owens, who did not start after injuring his knee a week ago, was 5-for-5 on the drive for 59 yards. Alonzo Russell hauled in a three-yard catch in the end zone with one hand to finish the series.
The Rockets lead Central Michigan, 21-14, at the half.
CMU drove 89 yards before the half for the final TD of the half. Saylor Lavalli leaped into the end zone from one yard out.
FIRST QUARTER
University of Toledo's linebackers are helping out their young quarterback in a big way.
Chase Murdock's interception gave the offense a short field for UT's first touchdown, and Junior Sylvestre's fumble recovery produced another score.
The Rockets, in the first start of true freshman quarterback Logan Woodside, lead Central Michigan 14-7 after one quarter.
Sylvestre came off the edge to sack CMU's Cooper Rush, forcing a fumble. which he recovered for a 22-yard TD. That score, coming before the end of the quarter, put UT ahead 14-7.
Murdock's interception on the first series of the game gave Woodside a short field to play with from CMU's 29. David Fluellen capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.
