Rockets fall on road to Broncos
Western Michigan uses late run to knock off Toledo
1/18/2014KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The University of Toledo women’s basketball team fell 78-72 Saturday at Western Michigan.
Senior Andola Dortch led UT (7-9, 2-3 Mid-American Conferfence) with a game-high 19 points and five assists, followed by senior Brianna Jones and junior Inma Zanoguera with 16 each, and sophomore Ana Capotosto with 15.
Jones added 13 rebounds to post her team-best fifth double-double on the season.
Alex Morton paced five WMU players in double figures with 17 points, while Miracle Woods and Marquisha Harris registered 16 points each, A.J. Johnson had 11, and Michelle O’Brien contributed 10 off the bench.
Toledo started aggressively and held a 16-13 lead at the 12:54 mark.
Zanoguera sparked the strong start with seven points.
The teams traded baskets before the Broncos (7-9, 3-2) took advantage of a mini 10-4 burst to open up a 27-21 advantage with 5:58 remaining in the first half.
Toledo could not cut into the deficit any further in the waning moments of the opening stanza and trailed 38-29 at the intermission.
The Rockets began the second half with some flare and utilized a 13-4 burst to knot the score at 42, forcing the Broncos into a timeout at 15:50.
Capotosto and Jones combined for nine of the 13 points to draw the teams even for a third time.
Following a layup by Morton, Capotosto drilled her third 3 to give the visitors their first lead since the first half.
The division rivals traded the lead on two more occasions before Western Michigan took the lead back.
UT stayed within striking distance on the strength of Dortch to take back the lead, 62-61, at the 8:05 mark. Dortch accounted for seven of Toledo’s nine points in a span of a little over two minutes to change the momentum in the game.
Following a timeout, though, WMU went on a 7-0 burst to establish an advantage it would not relinquish. The Rockets cut the deficit to one point on a three-point field goal by Zanoguera.
Western Michigan’s Woods sealed the home victory by scoring her teams’ final eight points.
