Story updated at 10:15 a.m. on June 6, 2014 to clarify when Anthony Stacey interviewed for the position.

The leading scorer in Bowling Green State University men’s basketball history is a candidate for a job with the Falcons' archrival.

Anthony Stacey, the Mid-American Conference player of the year in 1999-2000, has interviewed to be an assistant at the University of Toledo, The Blade has learned. The interview came in April for the position that ultimately went to Mike Wells. Stacey is now in the mix for a new opening.

Stacey, who in April was named head coach at Sandusky High School, has never coached in college. He spent the past three seasons as a high school head coach at Medina in northeast Ohio, compiling a 41-33 record.

Efforts to reach Stacey were unsuccessful.

Toledo coach Tod Kowalczyk will hire an assistant to replace Jordan Mincy, who is leaving after one season for Louisiana Tech. Kowalczyk will likely target an African-American after losing three from his staff since the end of last season. Stacey meets that criteria.

In his first year at Medina, Stacey led the Bees to the regional final, where they lost to Whitmer. The game was later vacated after the Ohio High School Athletic Association determined Whitmer guard LeRoy Alexander was ineligible.

This past season, Medina finished as district runners-up with a 19-7 record. Among the team’s leaders is senior point guard Craig Randall II, whom Toledo has reportedly offered a scholarship.

Should Stacey leave Sandusky, his replacement would be the program’s sixth head coach since the start of the 2011-12 school year.

Stacey was inducted into BG's hall of fame in 2012, and his No. 34 jersey is retired at the school. His 1,938 points and 241 steals rank atop Bowling Green annals.

Stacey played professionally in Spain for nine-plus seasons. The Elyria native then broke into coaching at Admiral King and Lorain High School.
