MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — University of Toledo golf coach Jamie Broce was a putt away Wednesday from winning the 47th PGA Professional National Championship before falling in a sudden-death playoff.

Broce lost to Michael Block of Aliso Viejo, Calif. After both had pars on the first playoff hole, Block birdied the second hole to win the title at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

Broce still earned a spot in this year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville on Aug. 7-10.

Broce entered the final round with a three-shot lead over Block and didn’t lose his lead until bogeying the 18th hole. He finished at 2-under 286 (68-72-71-75), while Block finished 73-69-72-72.
