Trenton tops Storm on 2 quick goals in last minutes
11/13/2003TRENTON - The Storm played 56 minutes of solid hockey, but it was the final four minutes against Trenton where Toledo let valuable points slip away last night at Sovereign Bank Arena.
The Titans scored two goals in a span of 14 seconds in the final three minutes to beat the Storm 3-1.
The loss is the fourth in a row for the Storm, which travels to Reading to face the Royals tomorrow. The Storm has a return engagement with the Titans at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sovereign Bank Arena.
Joe Rybar put the Titans ahead 2-1 with 3:18 left in the third period when he snapped a one-timer past a screened Doug Teskey.
The Titans finished off the Storm 14 seconds later when Bill Cass blasted a shot through Teskey s pads with traffic in front of the Storm net for his second goal in as many games, giving the Titans a 3-1 advantage.
We have not generated a lot lately, said Storm coach Steve Harrison. I see things that are starting to come a little bit. We just have to be patient. I thought the third period we came on. We just have to keep doing our system and not get away from it. Tonight the score is 1-1 and we have a couple of breakdowns and got away from our system for four minutes. We can t do that as a team.
Nick Parillo tied the game 1-1 with 9:18 left in the third period when he knocked his own rebound past Titans goalie Chris Houle. The Storm didn t put much pressure on Houle, who was making his first ECHL start, until the third period. Houle finished with 19 saves.
I was pleased for the most part of the game, said Harrison. You have to close it out and at least get a point or win it in overtime. Those are the things that happen when you are struggling.
Wes Mason, who assisted Parillo s goal, nearly put the Storm ahead two minutes later when his shot beat Houle, but clanked off the post.
Matt Zultek broke the scoreless tie with 13:53 left in the second period, on a power play deflection.
Landon Bathe, who was with the Titans all through training camp last season, had four penalty minutes for the Storm.
Former Titan forward Adam Edinger has gotten off to a slow start with the Storm.
Edinger, who led the Titans in scoring last season, has three goals and two assists.
The Storm power play is struggling along with Edinger. The Storm had converted five of 56 chances heading into last night s game, which was good for 30th in the league.
