Storm forward Smith to be player of month

Toledo forward Scooter Smith appreciates being named ECHL player of the month, but it wouldn't mean anything if the Storm weren't off to such a successful start.

Smith is expected to be named the CCM ECHL player of the month today after scoring five goals and handing out six assists in October. The left winger is tied for the league lead in points and has led Toledo to a 3-1-1 start, which is the best record in the North Division.

"It would not mean much if we weren't at the top of our division," Smith said. "Individual things are great, but it's fun to be on a team that's doing well."

Toledo did not have any team member named player of the month all of last year.

Among Smith's contributions were two game-winning goals. He scored the decisive marker with just 36 seconds left in regulation in the Storm's season-opening win over Dayton. Smith also netted the game-winner in overtime against Johnstown on Oct. 29.

"Those goals are a little more special than the average goal," he said.

"It's something to be proud of personally," he said. "I just need to keep producing and we need to keep winning."
