McCollum backstops Walleye to shootout win

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Toledo goaltender Thomas McCollum stopped all five Kalamazoo shooters as the Walleye defeated the K-Wings, 4-3, Wednesday night in a shootout.

McCollum also stopped 43 shots en route to picking up his seventh ECHL win for Toledo (28-27-4 overall).

Walleye rookie Andy Bohmbach scored with 1:28 remaining in the third period to tie the score at 3-all to help send the game into overtime.

Bohmbach created a turnover at the Kalamazoo blueline before making a strong individual effort to beat Wings' goalie Riley Gill for the goal.

The K-Wings scored twice early in the third to jump ahead of the Walleye for the first time in the game at 3-2 before Bohmbach was able to get the equalizer. With the win, Toledo moves to 5-8-1 against Kalamazoo.

"We came out with terrific energy tonight," head coach Nick Vitucci said. "Our power play has been a nice catalyst for us in these games.

"You are going to be successful if our power play and goaltending remains strong."

NOTES: Prior to the game, the Walleye signed forward John May to a contract. May has three goals and three assists in seven ECHL games.
