Toledo collects another shoot-out win

CHICAGO -- For a second straight night the Toledo Walleye collected a shootout win, this time 4-3 in Chicago. Toledo is 26-28-2-2 on the season and 12-14-2-0 away from home.

In the first period, Chicago would collect a 1-0 lead just 3:23 in. Toledo would tie the game at 4:08 of the first when Derek Brochu tipped a shot in. Bryan Rufenach and Nick Oslund assisted on the first professional goal from Brochu. Toledo would collect the lead at 14:24 of the period when Mike Thomas fed Joey Martin out in front. Martin beat Chicago goaltender Allen York for his 17th goal of the year.

“We knew they would come out with some fire tonight,” said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. “I thought we did a great job withstanding that first rush. We gave ourselves a chance in the third.”

Martin would put the Walleye in front 3-1 at 3:29 of the second when he scored his second goal of the game and 18th this season. Mike Thomas and Kyle Rogers collected the assists on that goal. The Express would tie the game at three with a pair of goals for the end of the second.

Neither team would score in the third period and overtime. In the shootout, Alec Richards stopped three of five shooters. Toledo would get goals from Andrej Nestrasil, Joey Martin and Todd Griffith in the shootout.

Walleye Notes: Walleye goaltender Alec Richards finished with 21 saves and has a record of 6-4-0-0 on the season. Toledo is 7-4-0-0 against Chicago.

The Toledo Walleye will return home Sunday March 4th against Cincinnati at 5:30 p.m.
