Kalamazoo, Mich. -- Alec Richards made 39 saves and Derek Brochu scored twice as the Walleye beat the Kalamazoo Wings 3-1.

Toledo (27-30-6) outshot Kalamazoo 10-7 in the opening period as both goaltenders shined. Richards, making his fourth consecutive start, turned away all seven shots he faced.

"Our message to the guys tonight was to go out and have some fun," said coach Nick Vitucci. "I thought our team responded with a great effort tonight, coming off of a tough weekend."

The Walleye grabbed the lead in the second period as Andrej Nestrasil got his sixth goal of the season at 13:40 of the period when tipped Kris Belan's pass past Riley Gill.

Toledo extended its lead to 2-0 at 12:16 of the third when Brochu scored. Brochu scored his second of the period 4:30 later. The Wings ruined Richards bid for a shutout with 18 seconds left.
