Walleye pick up shootout victory

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Toledo Walleye squandered an opportunity to pick up two points with a victory in regulation, but Joey Martin's shootout goal after a scoreless overtime lifted the Walleye to a 4-3 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night.

Toledo (28-31-6) built a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, but Kalamazoo (34-23-8) scored two third-period goals to tie the game.

After a scoreless OT, Martin had the lone shootout goal while Alex Ricards (41 saves) did not allow a puck into the net to help secure the win.

Toledo took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Todd Griffith and Harrison Reed. Griffith's goal came on the power play off an assist from Kyle Page as Toledo went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

Andrej Nestrasil made it 3-0 midway through the second period with assists from Griffith and Derek Brochu before the Wings rallied with one goal in the second and two in the third.

The teams amassed a total of 21 penalties and 74 penalty minutes in the game.
