Toledo Walleye score with 35.5 left in OT to beat Cincinnati

The Toledo Walleye knocked off the Cincinnati Cyclones 3-2 in overtime tonight.

Toledo rookie Terry Broadhurst scored the game winner with 35.5 seconds left in OT. It was the Walleye's only shot of the overtime and Broadhurst's first as a pro.

The Walleye scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead in the second period.

Cincinnati scored first 8:13 into the game. But Toledo responded with goals from captain Kyle Rogers and defenseman Wes O'Neill before a crowd of 4,631 at the Huntington Center.

Rogers scored his first of the season midway through the first period to tie it at 1 and O'Neill scored at the midpoint of the second to give the Walleye the lead.

But Cincinnati tied it at 2 with 5:55 left as former Walleye player Michael Pelech cashed in after collecting a big rebound.

Toledo rookie goalie Kent Simpson, making just his second pro start, finished with 23 saves on 25 shots. Simpson was solid and particularly strong early in the third to protect the lead.

The Walleye clamped down defensively and outshot the Cyclones 34-25.

Mathieu Aubin scored for Cincinnati (1-1-0) and Cyclones goalie Brian Foster had 31 saves.

It was the last home game of the month for the Walleye, who play the next five on the road. The team plays at Kalamazoo on Saturday. Next weekend the Walleye travel to Reading for a Thursday game and then to Trenton for back-to-back road games on Friday and Saturday.

Toledo returns home on Saturday, Nov. 2, to take on Fort Wayne.
