Walleye suffer season’s first loss

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Toledo Walleye dropped their first game of the season, losing 4-2 to host Kalamazoo on Saturday night at Wings Stadium.

It was the first road contest of the season for Toledo, which fell to 2-1-0 on the season.

“One of our biggest keys tonight was to make smart, simple plays,” said coach Nick Vitucci. “It is extremely hard to win in this building. We played well enough to win tonight but credit Kalamazoo for making the plays.”

Darren Archibald scored twice for the Wings (3-1-0).

Toledo’s Byron Froese scored a goal and added an assist in the loss. Willie Coetzee added the other goal for Toledo while Joey Martin and Terry Broadhurst each added assists.

For Toledo, goaltender Petr Mrazek finished with 36 saves as the Walleye outshot the Wings 42-40.

Kory Karlander notched a goal and an assist in the win for Kalamazoo while Joe Cannata made 40 saves.
