Evansville scores 5 unanswered goals to defeat Toledo Walleye 8-5

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Toledo scored five times on the road and led by two goals in the second period Friday night, but the Walleye went on to lose 8-5 to Evansville.

Toledo led 4-2 in the second period but the IceMen scored five unanswered goals. Evansville scored three goals in a span of 45 seconds to take the lead for good.

Rookie goalie Kent Simpson gave up six goals before being replaced by Jordan Pearce, who yielded two more goals.

“That 45 second stretch in the second period was our undoing,” Walleye coach Nick Vitucci said.

Joey Martin had two goals and an assist for Toledo which now is 13-9-1 overall and 7-4-1 on the road this season.

Wes O'Neill, Willie Coetzee, and Luke Glendening also scored for the Walleye. Coetzee also had an assist.

The IceMen took a one-goal lead just 2:12 into the game but Toledo tied it at 4:37 when Glendening ripped a shot by Evansville goalie Paul Karpowich (10 saves), who also was pulled.

“Limiting turnovers was the key for us going into this game,” Vitucci said. “They came at us hard tonight in the first period, but we weathered that storm and responded with one of our own. “

Coetzee tied it at 2 on assists from Martin and Kyle Rogers.

The same line gave Toledo its first lead of the game at 18:57 of the first when Martin scored

Martin scored again to make it 4-2 in the second. The IceMen scored six of the next seven goals.

The Walleye play at Kalamazoo today at 7:30 p.m.
