Pearce backstops Walleye win

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Walleye goalie Jordan Pearce made 35 saves to record his second shutout of the season on Friday night as he led Toledo to a 2-0 win over Kalamazoo.

Rookie forward Terry Broadhurst and veteran forward Randy Rowe scored the goals for the Walleye.

Pearce made 12 saves in the opening period and nine in the second before stopping all 14 shots in the third period. Pearce was particularly strong in the third when he turned away several quality chances.

Broadhurst put Toledo (19-13-1) up 1-0 at 8:52 of the first period. Broadhurst took a pass from Adam Hobson, cut in front and beat Wings' goaltender Joel Martin (23 saves). It was Broadhurst's 12th goal of the season. The rookie has now scored in three straight games.

Toledo didn’t waste any time scoring in the second as Rowe deflected Max Nicastro’s shot through the legs of Martin 18 seconds into the second period. It was the ninth goal of the season for Rowe.

The Walleye host Orlando today at 7:05 p.m.
