Walleye fall in OT for 3rd straight loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Walleye rallied with two goals in the third period but lost 5-4 in overtime to Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

Willie Coetzee, Toledo's leading scorer, tallied two goals. Coetzee tied it with a power play goal with 4:38 left in regulation to send it to OT.

Jean-Michel Rizk scored 3:05 into OT as Fort Wayne emerged with the win.

Byron Froese and Trevor Parkes also scored for Toledo, while goalie Kent Simpson had 25 saves.

Coetzee, who now has a team-high 23 goals, also scored in the second period.

Fort Wayne scored 1:45 into the game. Froese knotted it at 1 when he fired a shot past Jeff Deslauriers (31 saves) at 13:01.

Toledo (30-19-8) fell behind 3-1 in the second before scoring three of the next four goals.

“Credit this team for not giving up at all,” coach Nick Vitucci said. “We fought all the way to the end.”

Toledo earned a point but the team has lost its last seven games that have gone to overtime.

FISH TALES: D Cody Lampl signed a player tryout agreement with Grand Rapids of the AHL. Lampl has appeared in 53 games this season with Toledo, scoring five goals with eight assists. The native of Ketchum, Idaho is currently a plus-16, which leads the team.
