Walleye sign 2 defensemen from Niagara University

Niagara University defensemen Dan Weiss and CJ Chartrain have agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2013-14 season.

Weiss, a native of Ballwin, Missouri, spent the last four seasons playing for the Niagara Purple Eagles. While at Niagara, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound defenseman appeared in 125 games, netting seven goals and 25 assists to go along with 62 penalty minutes.

Weiss, 23, was a co-captain this past season and a recipient of the team’s CLAW award, given to a player who blocks shots and is very physical.

“These are two young smart hockey players,” Head Coach Nick Vitucci said. “Both players are very strong in their own end and they do all the little things well.”

Chartain, 23, of Pointe-Claire, Quebec, played in 139 games for the Purple Eagles. He collected 12 goals, 39 assists and 121 penalty minutes. Both Chartain and Weiss were named to the Atlantic Hockey Association’s All-Academic team.

The Walleye's home opener is Oct. 26 against the Wheeling Nailers.
