Walleye rally for 2nd straight win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Walleye rallied for a second straight win on the road tonight.

Toledo trailed Evansville 1-0 after one period but then scored the next three goals and defeated the IceMen 3-2.

Goaltender Mac Carruth (6-9-0) made 30 saves on 32 shots in net for Toledo.

Alden Hirschfeld got the Walleye going early in the second period when he blasted a wrist shot past goaltender Mike Clemente (22 saves) for his sixth goal of the season.

The Walleye took the lead midway through the second when Richard Nedomlel threw a shot from the blueline that found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.

In the third period Max Shalunov was tackled on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot at 7:10. Shalunov backhanded his shot to beat Clemente for his seventh goal of the season.

Toledo (14-22-3) and is now 5-13-3 on the road.

Evansville scored the first goal of the game at 3:40 of the first period when Jacob Johnston beat Carruth on a wrist shot.

“Evansville has been the best home ice team in the ECHL this year,” Walleye coach Nick Vitucci said. “We battled hard after giving up the first goal of the game and played some of our best hockey on the road in this game. It was a strong win for us tonight against one of the better teams in our league.”

Forward Aaron Clarke collected a pair of assists. Toledo finished the season series 4-3-1 against Evansville.

The Walleye host Cincinnati on Friday and Elmira on Saturday.
