Walleye goalie stellar in loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Walleye veteran goalie Hannu Toivonen stopped 45 shots but Toledo lost 2-1 to Fort Wayne today.

Toledo defenseman C.J. Chartrain scored 22 seconds into the game on assists from Brett Perlini and Matt Abercrombie. But Fort Wayne countered with two unanswered goals to hand the Walleye their fourth straight loss.

Toledo managed to get just 19 shots on net.

Toivonen stopped 16 shots in the first period, 16 more in the second and finished with 13 in the third.

“Toivonen did an amazing job to give us an opportunity with his stellar play,” Walleye coach Dan Watson said.

The game was tied at 1 but Chris Auger scored the game winner midway through the third period.

Brandon Marino tied it up in the second period for the Komets. Auger and Marion each finished with a goal and an assist. Scott Fleming had two assists for Fort Wayne.

Komets goalie Steven Summerhays earned his first pro win.

The Komets also defeated the Walleye 4-1 in Toledo on Friday night. The Komets lost 5-2 to Cincinnati on Saturday. Toledo is now 1-6-1 against the Komets this season. The teams meet again on Saturday at Fort Wayne.

Toivonen (12-16-0) finished with 27 saves in the loss on Friday.

Toledo (21-43-5) is now 10-21-4 on the road.

The Walleye have three games left in the regular season, including two at home next Friday and Sunday.
