Sylvania Council, after months of talks about what defines a park, has decided that two properties in Sylvania are deserving of formal recognition as parks - the David E. Richards and the Harroun Community parks.

The action was welcomed by Sylvania residents who have been campaigning to get the city to take formal action to designate parks as parks, a topic that cropped up during the summer after council learned that Highland Meadows Golf Club was asking about buying or leasing the David E. Richards Park for expansion and improvement.

Highland's request triggered an outcry from Sylvania residents, and raised questions about the lack of formal designation of city land as parks. To thwart sale of Richards to the golf club, residents asked council to officially designate it as a park. Highland Meadows later backed away from its request.
