Sylvania Township group speaks of fire levies

10/10/2007

With its "1.5 Saves Lives" slogan, the grassroots group called Supporters For A Safe Sylvania is trying to garner support for a proposed 1.5-mill, five-year fire levy.

The group was formed in response to what it describes as a fiscal crisis in the Sylvania Township Fire Department.

It circulated initiative petitions and obtained the signatures of about 3,000 registered voters, more than enough to get the proposal on the Nov. 6 ballot in Sylvania Township and the city of Sylvania.

Supporters For A Safe Sylvania is sponsoring a public forum at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 that will allow residents to express their views about the proposed millage levy. The forum will be at the American Legion Post 468, 5580 Centennial Road, Sylvania.

Voters will decide two other issues, both placed on the ballot by Sylvania Township trustees: a 0.5-mill operating levy for the fire department and a 0.5-mill bond issue for new fire stations and equipment. A mill is a $1 tax for every $1,000 of taxable property.
