Sylvanian, St. Ursula grad at Baldwin-Wallace earns volleyball honors

Baldwin-Wallace College senior volleyball standout Kelsey Hills, a St. Ursula graduate from Sylvania, has been named a 2007 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III honorable mention All-American.

This is the cap to one of the greatest careers in B-W volleyball history, according to Baldwin-Wallace officials. Kelsey helped B-W compile an 88-43 record and capture the 2006 OAC regular season title. She is a four-time All-OAC and two-time Academic All-OAC and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV player.

Kelsey ended her career second all-time at B-W with 1,702 kills and seventh in both defensive digs (1,321) and solo blocks (108).

BASKETBALL: Junior guard Dan Borcherdt had a game-high 11 assists for the Mount Vernon Nazarene University's basketball team in its first road game at Ohio Christian. The Archbold graduate also scored 11 points.

SWIMMING: Chelsea Kazmierski, a freshman, is a member of the Bowling Green State University swim team as one of their competitors in the long-distance events.

She has been swimming for the Toledo YMCA Penguins for over seven years. She swam four years and graduated from Whitmer High School, where she lettered all four years.

ALL-ACADEMIC: Five Owens Community College athletes were selected to the 2006-07 Academic All-American Team by the National Junior College Athletic Association. They included Genoa's Laura and Sara Gerkensmeyer, both members of the volleyball team; Jeremy Sheets, Bowling Green, baseball; Justin McIntyre, Monroe, soccer, and Ryan Davis, Tucson, soccer.

TENNIS: Rachel Huckaba, a sophomore at Bluffton College from Perrysburg, played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the women's tennis team. The team finished ninth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a overall dual meet record of 0-13 and 0-8 in league play.

SOFTBALL: Beth Yahraus, a Bryan High School grad, is a member of the softball team at Hope College.

Kellie Kenney, an Emmanuel Christian grad, is a softball pitcher at Bluffton University.

SWIMMING: Delaney Banas, a graduate of Central Catholic, is a member of the Ohio Northern University women's swimming and diving team, which is the defending Ohio Conference champion.

FOOTBALL: It's no secret that the Mount Union College football team scores a lot of points. And one of those helping to pile up the Division III powerhouse's total is Archbold High School graduate Mike Zimmerman, the field goal and extra-point kicker for the Purple Raiders.

He has set a NCAA Division III record for points scored by a kicker with 277 points and another record by kicking his 103rd straight PAT.

Zach Lashaway, a former standout athlete at Evergreen High School, is the starting tight end for the football team at Marietta College, where he is a freshman. He also will be a candidate for the baseball team. He is majoring in petroleum engineering.

SWIMMING: Derek Balogh, a freshman at Ashland University, is off to a great start as a member of the swimming and diving team.

The Sylvania Northview graduate was named Ashland's swimming and diving athlete of the week after winning the 100-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle in a meet against Findlay and then the 200-IM and 100-freestyle in a tri-meet against Edinboro and IUP.

VOLLEYBALL: Samford freshman setter Hillary Fountain, a Springfield High School graduate, has been named Ohio Valley Conference all-newcomer for the past season.

Fountain finished fifth in the OVC in assists with 12.9 per game. She was third in assists for a single season (1,256) and seventh all-time. She had a career-high 71 assists in a five-game match against Austin Peay. The Bulldogs were 16-13 for the season (11-9 in OVC), their first winning season in 20 years.
