Toledo native Shelli Staudt has been appointed principal of Mary Immaculate School, a Toledo school for children with unique learning needs.

The school is sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Ms. Staudt was previously an intervention specialist in Akron City Schools, where she worked for nine years with children with special needs. Before that, she was a teacher at the former Ladyfield School operated by the Sisters of Notre Dame.

She is the first lay principal to be appointed at Mary Immaculate.

Ms. Staudt recently received her master of science degree in education, with a focus on educational leadership.

Duane Haas of Sylvania, a member of the Toledo Elks Lodge No. 53, was installed as the leader of the Northwest District, Ohio Elks Association.

His installation took place at the Order's 144th Grand Lodge Convention held early this month in Anaheim, Calif.
