Sylvania City Council has given its approval to a plan to build a training facility for assistance dogs on the site of the Ability Center of the Greater Toledo Area, 5605 Monroe Street.

City Council approved a special use permit for an expansion of the Ability Center which will include the training center, a dog dormitory, new administrative space, and an independent living center for Assistance Dogs of America, now located near Swanton.

The preliminary site plan was approved 6-0, with Douglas Haynam absent, at the July 21 meeting, according to Council Clerk Margie Lintner.

The addition will include three buildings, linked by covered walkways for a total of 14,000 square feet, said Barb Taylor, administrative secretary for the zoning department.

The group will be required to submit a final site plan to the public service director for approval, Ms. Taylor said.
