WAUSEON - Several local families will be presented with Blue Star Service Banners during a special program at 2 p.m. Sunday in front of the Fulton County War Memorial, 224 South Fulton St., in Wauseon.

The public is encouraged to attend to show support for the families and those serving in the military. "Remember that our troops make sacrifices everyday so that we may enjoy the freedom that we often take for granted," said Sherryann Franks, Americanism chairman for the Wauseon American Legion Auxiliary.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the American Legion Post 265 at 1105 North Shoop Ave., in Wauseon.

Anyone interested in riding motorcycles with the American Legion Riders as part of this event, or those seeking more information on the event, can contact Ms. Franks at 419-335-6394. The American Legion Riders' motorcycle group will be involved in the presentation, Ms. Franks said earlier this week.

Event sponsors are the Wauseon legion and its auxiliary members and the Sons of the American Legion.

The service banners are available courtesy of the legion auxiliary for families in the Wauseon area who have sons, daughters, or spouses serving in the armed forces. Banners can be displayed in windows of homes to remind the community of those in the service.

Blue Star Service Banners are an American tradition that date to World War I.

The Blue Star Service Banner typically displayed in windows of families' homes is an 8 1/2-inch by 14-inch white field, featuring a blue star sewn onto a red banner.
