Monroe grad makes points as leader of Trine's women's basketball team
12/3/2008Monroe High School graduate Sarah Howe leads a talented junior class at Trine University this season.
Howe was named first team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association last season. Howe averaged 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for Trine, which is in Angola, Ind. and formerly was called Tri-State University.
In her 2008-09 debut, Howe scored 11 points to lead Trine to an 83-40 win over Earlham (Ind.) College on Nov. 21.
Howe then scored a team-high 20 points in a 59-58 win over Ohio Northern on Nov 22. She also had 12 rebounds to complete her first double-double of the season.
On Nov. 25, Howe tallied 14 points, had seven assists, and grabbed five rebounds in a 60-59 loss to Manchester (Ind.) College.
SOCCER: Ohio Northern University junior Jimmy Matuszak, a Perrysburg High School graduate, scored three game-winning goals for the Polar Bears soccer team this season.
On Nov. 22, Matuszak headed in the decisive goal in Ohio Northern's 2-1 win over Hobart (N.Y.) in a NCAA III sectional semifinal.
Matuszak, a defender, scored eight goals this season for the Polar Bears. He also had 19 shots on goal for ONU (20-6-5-1 overall, 5-3-1 Ohio Athletic Conference).
BASEKTBALL: Two former Northern Lakes League players have joined forces at Marietta College.
Jordan Nichols (Rossford) and Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green) helped Marietta take a season-opening 86-67 victory over Marygrove College (Detroit) on Nov. 22.
Kilpatrick scored six points and grabbed one rebound in the opener. Nichols pulled down four rebounds and had one assist.
Nichols also scored two points in Marietta's second win of the season, a 66-65 win over Adrian College, on Nov. 23.
BASKETBALL: Holy Cross College coach Ralph Willard had glowing praise for Ottawa Hills senior Phil Beans, who signed to play for Willard's program recently.
Beans, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward, led the Toledo Area Athletic Conference in both scoring (18.1 points per game) and rebounding (10.9 rebounds per game) last year.
He led the Green Bears to a co-championship.
The senior hopes to do it again this year before heading to Holy Cross, which is in Worcester, Mass., next season.
"Phil will give us a strong low post presence and is a very good rebounder on both ends of the floor," Willard said shortly after the official signing.
"He is an outstanding young man."
BASKETBALL: Hillsdale College senior Tony Gugino, a native of Holland, Mich., was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 25.
Gugino, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 17 points and eight rebounds per game in leading the Chargers to wins over Lewis (68-65) and the University of Indianapolis (75-55).
Gugino scored a team-high 20 points in the team's win over Indianapolis.
On Nov. 22, Gugino led the Chargers with 20 points in a 75-55 win over the University of Indianapolis.
Luke Laser (Hillsdale High School) had six points and five rebounds in the win. Nick Meinert, a freshman from St. Francis de Sales, had three rebounds in eight minutes of action in his first collegiate contest.
