Westphal new leader of area Komen affiliate

Sylvania city councilman Mary J. Westphal has been chosen as the new executive director of the Northwest Ohio affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, a national breast-cancer research charity.

Ms. Westphal has 25 years experience in non-profit management and communications, most recently as director of development for the Toledo Symphony.

She is a past president of the Junior League of Toledo.

Her blend of private and community experience, solid record of management success and commitment to women s issues will be valued assets in her new job, said Cindy Taylor, board president for the Komen Northwest Ohio affiliate.

Ms. Westphal, 52, has a bachelor s degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University. She is married to Bob Westphal and has three children.

The Northwest Ohio affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure has appointed a new executive director.

Ms. Westphal was appointed to the Sylvania City Council in August to fill the remaining 16 months of the term vacated by Councilman Read Backus.
