Swanton council to blow whistle on long-term parking on village streets

SWANTON - Long-term parking will become a thing of the past on village streets if local lawmakers have their way.

The village council last week approved the third readings of ordinances that forbid parking for more than 48 hours on public streets, and ban the unattended parking of all trailers.

Also soon to be prohibited in Swanton is the washing or repairing of vehicles in any public park.

All of the revised laws take effect July 8.

Mayor James Bushong said that while the parking ordinances apply village-wide, they were prompted by complaints about truck trailer parking on Broadway and the parking of vehicles with utility trailers on Lincoln Avenue.

"If they leave their tractors, they can park for a little while," the mayor said of the truckers who sometimes leave trailers along Broadway pending loading or unloading at industries along that street.

Village administrator Jon Gochenour said during an earlier reading of the ordinances that he, too, had received complaints about construction trailers parked overnight on residential streets and extended parking of commercial vehicles.
