The westernmost mile of Alexis Road will be repaved this spring and early summer under an agreement Sylvania City Council approved last week with the Ohio Department of Transportation.

ODOT will pay 50 percent of the cost for the actual paving, while Sylvania will have to pay the full cost for curb repairs and replacement of wheelchair ramps at crosswalks, Jeff Ballmer, the city's service director, told council.

Sylvania also will have to pay the extra cost of installing vehicle-detection cameras at traffic lights instead of replacing magnetic loops in the pavement, Mr. Ballmer said.

Sylvania's estimated share for the project is $454,480, but officials will find out for sure in early April when the transportation department awards its contract.

Construction is likely to last for about 60 days once it starts, Mr. Ballmer said.

Sylvania plans resurfacing projects on Graystone, Grenlock, Gregory, and San Reno drives, Gillingham Court, and Harroun Road this year, though so far construction contracts have not been awarded.

Sylvania Township's trustees, meanwhile, last week awarded two contracts totaling more than $530,000 to Gerken Paving of Napoleon for road repaving this year.

Most of the work is in a $440,658 contract for the township's regular road-paving program, which will involve 2.34 miles of roadway on Nantuckett Drive, Elmwood, Lancelot, Falconhurst, and Tejon roads, and Robinhood and Eaglehurst lanes.

But a $92,750 contract for repaving a 0.2-mile section of North Republic Boulevard required a separate contract because it's a joint project with the Lucas County engineer's office, related to construction of a storm sewer along Sylvania-Metamora Road, Public Works Manager Gregory Huffman said.

The North Republic bid came in 20 percent below the county engineer's cost estimate, while the low bid for the regular paving program was about 11 percent cheaper than expected, Mr. Huffman said.
