Summer-job forms set for Sylvania junior high students
3/23/2010Sylvania is taking applications from junior high school age youth interested in five-week summer jobs with the Sylvania Conservation Corps, which offers training and experience in a variety of outdoor construction and landscaping trades.
There are 25 openings in any given year, and participants are expected to be punctual and attend reliably for the three-days-per-week program that runs from June 15 through July 15.
Participants receive a stipend of $12 per day, half of which is paid out weekly, while the other half is paid into savings accounts set up in the children's names.
Bank books for the savings accounts are turned over to the children at a Conservation Corps family picnic on July 17, the Saturday after the final work session.
Applications are due May 3. Application forms are available at city offices and on the city Web site, cityofsylvania.com.
Conservation Corps tasks in past years have included extensive flower and shrubbery plantings along city streets and in parks; building a brick path; spreading trail stone and stabilizing a pond with stone banks; splitting cordwood, and building a 100-seat amphitheater with picnic tables, and birdhouses, and wind chimes.
Work hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with a 15-minute briefing at the start and a 15-minute break in the middle. Participants will be members of five-person crews supervised by a foreman.
Refreshments are provided by the city, so participants do not need to carry money.
They are urged, however, to wear clothing appropriate for outdoor work in city parks, including long pants and sturdy shoes. Hats, T-shirts, gloves, a waist pack, and a poncho will be provided on the first day.
