WWII memorial to be rededicated

A rededication ceremony for a World War II memorial relocated earlier this year from the former Burnham High School to Sylvania's City Administration Building has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

The Wall of Honor, saved from the Burnham Building before its recent demolition to clear its site for a new elementary school, lists hundreds of Burnham graduates, both men and women, who served in the military during the war, including 34 who were killed.

Organizers of the ceremony, scheduled for 3 p.m. in the administration building's lobby, especially invite Burnham veterans and their families to attend the brief event, and hope other members of the public will attend in their honor.

A proposal to reset name plaques on the memorial, so that names inadvertently omitted could be added in alphabetical order, was dropped when it was determined the name plaques are too fragile to remove and reset. Instead, a companion plaque has been ordered to include the more than 100 missing names. A master index of the more than 800 Burnham students and 12 faculty who served during World War II will be maintained near the memorials.
