Central Catholic High School is one of 52 schools across the United States chosen for recognition by computer maker Apple Inc. for its use of computer technology in its classrooms, the school announced last week.

Central was chosen an Apple Distinguished School for the second straight year and is one of two Ohio schools so honored this year. “This designation is reserved for schools that have implemented a 21st-century vision of education using Apple technology,” the announcement said.

Central Catholic in 2007 introduced its One Connected Community program, under which it provided every incoming student with an Apple MacBook laptop computer. Students use the computers in class and at home, enabling all teachers to integrate technology education into their courses.

“I was especially impressed by the use of Apple's professional-level hardware and software to provide students with an industry-level media production environment,” said John Couch, Apple Computer, Inc.'s vice president of education.
