Sylvania Twp. police department, union resolve promotions issue

1/11/2011

A union grievance contesting promotions in the Sylvania Township Police Department last summer has been resolved after one of the promoted officers retired.

Under a settlement agreement township trustees approved last week with the Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and officer Sarah Toth, Ms. Toth will be promoted to sergeant in place of Sgt. Ron Dicus, who retired in December just four months after his own promotion.

Officer Toth had protested that the August promotions of officers Dicus and David Jankowski were improperly based on the results of examinations administered more than two years earlier.

The union said it would be fairer to conduct a new promotional exam, as did Mr. Dicus himself.

Ms. Toth's promotion took effect Sunday. Under the settlement, she waives any claim to higher pay she might have received had she been promoted sooner.
