1st phase of Sylvania trail project is off to official start

Officials break ground for $1.3M segment

Sylvania officials broke ground last week on the first phase of the city's River Trail Project.

This segment of the trail is to extend for 0.6 mile between Harroun Road and Main Street along Ten Mile Creek and connect the city's South of Monroe Development Project to Monroe Street by following the north branch of the creek.

The surface is to be paved in asphalt and concrete.

The cost of the first phase is $1.3 million, with $688,000 of the cost to be funded by state grants. The remainder is to be financed from the proceeds of a bond sale.

When the entire trail is finished, it will run 1.5 miles from Monroe east of U.S. 23 under the highway through the grounds of Flower Hospital, along the creek between Harroun and Main, and then reach Silica Drive and Monroe.

Phase 1 is expected to be done in the spring. The second and third phases have not been finalized.

In a message last week, Mayor Craig Stough stated that the trail "will provide new recreation opportunities for our residents and help attract new businesses to Sylvania. Our riverfront areas are an asset to our community, and the River Trail opens them up for more visibility, use, and enjoyment."
