Sylvania Township employees will be paying 31 percent more for their medical insurance starting in January, under action the trustees took last week.

Under the so-called high plan, an employee who is single will pay $161.12 per month for a policy covering 90 percent of claims after a $250 deductible. Family coverage will cost $458.65 after a $500 deductible.

A single employee in the low plan will pay $65.48 a month for coverage that will pay 80 percent after a $500 deductible is met. The employee's cost for family coverage will be $178.65 after a $1,000 deductible.

The higher premium cost of the high plan is borne by the employee. This year the township expects to pay $1.4 million for medical and drug claims for its 136 employees, according to Susan Wood, assistant administrator and human resources director.

The township is quasi-self-insured, and the higher payments are needed to build reserves, Administrator John Zeitler said.
