Sylvania City Council has voted 7-0 to solicit bids on 14 projects, including new paint for the interior of Sylvania Municipal Court and a half-ton pickup truck for the sewer department.

At its meeting Feb. 22, council approved an estimated $1 million for the work.

During a committee-of-the-whole meeting before the vote, council member Michael Brown urged council not to get overly involved in the details of each individual funding request, saying, "It's not city council's responsibility to micromanage the administration."

In other business, council approved an ordinance accepting the proposal of Mannik and Smith engineering firm, Toledo, to complete a subsurface investigation for planned construction work on Monroe Street from Erie Street to Silica Drive in 2013.

"Neighbors are not going to like this project," said Douglas Haynam, council member, referring to detours the work may cause.

The investigation will cost the city $65,219 and is needed to obtain maximum funding from the state of Ohio for the resurfacing project.

"It's time to start getting that project in line," Mayor Craig Stough said.

Council also approved allocating $28,875 to Pyrotecnico for the July 3 Independence Day celebration at Centennial Terrace. The city has contracted with Pyrotecnico for its fireworks display for several years. The display cost increased by 5 percent over 2011 because of manufacturing and shipping expenses, Mr. Brown said.

Bill Sanford, Sylvania's economic development administrator and services coordinator, pointed out that the fireworks are a joint project of the city of Sylvania, Sylvania Township, and Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District. The city pays for the fireworks and is reimbursed by the township and the recreation district for their share of expenses, Mr. Sanford said.

Donations are sought to support the event. Last year after donations the city and township paid about $10,000 each for the fireworks.
