Music festival planned at Centennial

Five Sylvania students plan a music festival in May featuring local bands at Centennial Terrace: Northview High School seniors Josh McAfee and Miraj Neve and junior Andy Edinger have teamed with Southview High School seniors Jeff Tiedeken and Adam Klepzig to create an event where local bands get the chance to play to a large audience in a professional venue.
"We want this to be a really positive and family-friendly event," Mr. Tiedeken said.
Band submissions are due through SylvaniaAlive.com by March 14. The group will hold auditions and choose 12 to 15 bands to perform at the event on May 19 at Centennial Terrace, 5773 Centennial Rd., Sylvania Township.
The event is sponsored by the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District.
New hardware store hopes for success: The economic plight did not stop Andrew Brown and Ed Foor from opening a hardware store in Sylvania Township. "I believe there's a niche for small hardware stores with personalized service," Mr. Brown said. 4 Star Pro Hardware opened at 3545 Silica Rd. in November.
"It's a tough area for retail exposure, as it lacks regular traffic," said Joe Francis of Signature Associates, a commercial real-estate firm. "The different exposure may lead to a different clientele and a different concept."
Hardware store sales are expected to rise steadily over the next three years, according to the North American Retail Hardware Association.
Tam-O-Shanter ice in Sylvania kept cool by a team of 3: Todd Butler, operations manager at the popular indoor facility, at 7060 Sylvania Ave. in Sylvania, has a crew to maintain the two rinks every hour Monday through Friday. The facility is owned by the Sylvania Recreation Corp., a nonprofit agency organized by the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District. It is not supported by tax dollars, Mr. Butler said.
The crew, Todd Lang and Ken Thanisui, who have worked there for 11 years and 1 1/2 years, respectively, shave the ice after daily activities and every hour. They also cut the edges of the rinks to prevent the ice from warping around the perimeters, Mr. Butler said.
"The key to a successful operation is well-maintained equipment and guys to maintain it," he said.
ProMedica Flower Hospital emergency center recognized for improved patient wait time, by Flower Hospital: The ProMedica Quality & Process Innovation department recently gave the ProMedica Flower Hospital Emergency Center the 2011 systemwide ProMedica quality award for performance improvement. The emergency center's average wait time is 30 minutes or less.
Lourdes' planetarium travels back in time to the dawn of the space age, by Lourdes University: Appold Planetarium visitors can experience the excitement of the early days of space exploration in "Dawn of the Space Age." Viewers will travel through time, from the launch of the first artificial satellite Sputnik to the International Space Station.
