Nuisance abatement approved by trustees
Board also OKs rezoning of 5 sites
3/14/2012The Sylvania Township trustees last week authorized nuisance abatement on a property, approved a request for a zoning change, and upheld disciplinary measures imposed on an officer by the police chief.
The rezoned properties are at 3545 and 3631 N. Centennial Rd. and 8305, 8321, 8331, and 8360 Brint Lane. The trustees approved a change in the zoning designation to R-2, for residential use, from M-3, for industrial and manufacturing.
Lonnie Zervos, one of the owners, explained that obtaining a loan to improve the property was impossible with the M-3 zoning. The trustees agreed that the zoning change would be in compliance with the township land use plan and followed recommendations by the Lucas County Planning Commission and the township's zoning commission.
The abated property, at 6039 Meade Rd., has generated complaints about brush and garbage in the driveway and broken windows and doors on the house and garage. The trustees approved spending $835 for cleanup and remediation and billing the owner. If the bill is not paid, the amount would be added to the property's taxes.
The trustees upheld the suspensions of a police officer disciplined for unholstering his weapon in violation of department policy and sleeping on the job. Michael Borman received a four-day suspension for the infraction involving his weapon, which occurred Nov. 16, and a five-day suspension for the other violation, which happened Nov. 26, township police Chief Rob Boehme said.
The chief said he imposed the discipline administratively after Mr. Borman was found to have violated policy by unholstering his sidearm in the passenger seat of a cruiser. He was caught sleeping in a cruiser 10 days later. Both suspensions have been served.
He filed grievances in both cases, and the matters went to the trustees for adjudication. After spending an hour in closed session, the trustees unanimously agreed with the disciplinary actions. The officer also is barred from working overtime for six months and is ineligible to serve in a command capacity for one year.
The officer earlier had been suspended for three days for being at fault in an accident that totaled a police cruiser, officials said.
