Kaptur bill to propose memorial for victims
10/2/2001WASHINGTON - Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) said she will introduce a bill today to set up a “Spirit of America Garden'' on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol as a memorial to the Sept. 11 terrorism victims.
She envisions a garden with five sides, in tribute to those who died or were injured in the attack on the Pentagon, and said it should include two trees to represent those who died or were injured as a result of the attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. She says it would include a keystone with a plaque expressing the purpose of the garden in tribute to those who died in the crash of hijacked United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
Miss Kaptur, who was the chief sponsor of a bill that passed Congress to build a memorial to World War II veterans, has the support of two dozen members for the garden memorial.
